There are two kinds of people who eat food:
People who eat food to enjoy eating something rare, and those who eat for daily needs.
I am the second kind of person.
To say bluntly, I am a second-rate garbage disposal. I will take the food given to me as long as it is not spoiled, too salty, or something I cannot/do not want to eat. As a poor college student, this may be necessary, but I do have to say I don’t eat as much as I used to. Thanks to the invention of braces, I cannot enjoy caramel, apples, and most candies like I want. I know some people who’ve been through this stage of perfection may have found a way around it (for example, cutting an apple, but who carries a knife with them to EVERY public situation?), but I have come to deal with these limitations.
Also, can’t forget to mention that pork is a no with me. It simply has been out of my diet far too long and I can only eat it if: I NEED something to eat and it is the ABSOLUTE ONLY thing around. I have eaten pork before in a situation like this, and I managed to get through the day, but was puking it up later.
The number one thing I have noticed about myself is that I don’t care that much about food. To me, food is something that I need in order to stop hunger pangs and unwanted headaches, so I’ll eat it out of necessity and not pleasure. No, I have not had my food epiphany yet, but this doesn’t mean I am a picky eater. I love to try new foods, but know I am not brave enough to try the chicken feet or the strange gelatinous part of the cow at Dim Sum. And I mean I have favorite foods like everyone else, it’s just hard to choose most of the time. I love my mom’s macaroni & cheese and her ox tail stew. I love Sheppard’s pie and how when you have a nice bowl of rice, you can add meat, vegetables, or sometimes fruit and you’ll have a great meal.
However, getting excited over how cooking something at a certain temperature or using some different spices will make a dish taste even better is just not how I feel about food. Pass the ketchup, salt and pepper and I will be able to enjoy this meal.
